The Wise Builder

The Wise BuilderScripture: Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does not act of them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house, and it fell, and great was its fall (Matt. 7:24-27 NASB).

This parable represents two foundations, a firm foundation, and a weak foundation. Also, two types of listeners are compared, those who are wise, and those who are foolish.

A wise person will build upon a firm foundation, while a foolish person will build upon a weak foundation. The “rock” represents stability, strength, safety, and protection upon which the wise will build. The “sand” represents weakness, insufficiency, instability, and gives a false sense of support—the foolish build upon sand.

The word of God teaches us to hear and to follow the Lord’s instructions. We must not merely listen to the word but also understand the value of each statement and its consequences.

The Lord likens the hearer and doer of the word to a wise man because of his obedience. Every believer is a builder, and the house that we build is a house of faith in Christ. We are to diligently seek the Scripture of truth, which leads us to Christ. We should not be hearers only but also active in obedience to the word of God. Applying the word of God enables us to withstand the vicissitudes of life. In the world we live in today, we’re provided with a false sense of security. We must not look at the world’s way of doing things, but we must be intentionally focused on Jesus.

We are living stones being built up as spiritual houses. We are a royal priesthood, a royal nation (1 Pet. 2:5, 9). Christ is the solid foundation on which we believe. Christ is the solid Rock on which we stand. All other ground is sinking sand. Therefore, we can stand victoriously.

Prayer: Father, of heaven and earth, thank You for Your Word, which teaches us how to live abundant lives. Help us to put aside the world and its ways, that we may live fruitful lives that are pleasing to You. Help us to adhere to your teachings as wise builders who are fit for your kingdom. Being rooted and grounded in your holy word of truth allows us to stand firmly, fixed, and stable, not likely to fall. Jesus, You are the solid stone that the builders rejected; yet You have become the cornerstone (Ps. 118:22). Let the words of our mouths and the meditation of our hearts be acceptable to You, ABBA. In Jesus’s Name, Amen.

Bountiful blessings to you, friends!

    1. Hi Elsa! Thank you for your comment. I love this passage, as well, because it reminds me to be careful of the way that I choose to walk. Building on my own will create an unstable foundation that will not remain. However, I have learned to go to God FIRST before starting new projects. Life is too short to travel on the wrong path. It’s a very foolish thing to do and a waste of precious time.

    1. Hi Librado! Thank you for your comment! I totally agree. We must continually examine things, especially before starting anything, we must ask ourselves the question “On whose foundation am I building? Is it for the Kingdom or the world? If God is not the Author than we might just want to reconsider doing anything without Him. God’s way of doing things is the only way for me. Otherwise my trust will be placed on the wrong foundation. Much appreciation my friend.
