“Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14 NIV).
A yoke is a wooden bar that joins two oxen to each other and the burden they pull. Examples of unequally yoked things are “stronger vs. weaker, taller vs. shorter, and smart vs. foolish.” To be unequally yoked means there are hindrances in the relationship. Instead of working together, they are at odds.
Do not be bound together with unbelievers; light and darkness have nothing in common. As a Christian, walking in the light means to act responsibly and live openly. Jesus said, “He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” Now that you are light in the Lord, walk as children of light. We relinquish all sins to follow Jesus’s example.
This is the message [of God’s promised revelation] which we have heard from Him and now announce to you, that God is light [He is holy, His message is truthful, He is perfect in righteousness], and in Him, there is no darkness at all [no sin, no wickedness, no imperfection]; (1 John 1:5 Amp. Bible).
God’s very nature is light. Light and darkness are as incompatible in the Christian as unbelievers are to God. Believers and unbelievers have nothing in common. No one can serve two masters. You either will hate one or love the other. Do not be deceived, God is not mocked. The unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom.
To become involved romantically with a non-Christian is a recipe for turmoil. It’s like an open door, inviting trouble to enter. It’s a setup for a fall. Truth warns us that light and darkness have nothing in common. Have you exchanged the truth for a lie?
1 Cor. 15:33 tells us that bad company corrupts good character. You run the risk of mimicking the world’s behavior. You risk the possibility of returning to the sinful life that you once left. You risk turning away from God, misrepresenting Him and Christianity. Do not take up the lifestyle of corrupt people. Have you really left the past behind?
As Christians, we are not to shun unbelievers; we are to tell others of the love of Jesus Christ. We are lights in a dark world and witnesses to the lost. We are ambassadors to a dying world. Our primary focus is to share the Gospel with others and to demonstrate the love of Christ. We are to stand firm against ungodly influences, false teaching, and a watered-down truth of Scripture. We are in the world but not of the world; (Romans 12:2). We are physically present but not a part of the world’s value systems. The world’s value system contradicts God’s way of doing things.
To love the world is idolatry. We are to love God and not the things of this world. Pleasure is no longer our calling; believers are called to worship God. We are set apart, holy, and living a righteous life in Jesus Christ. The world is what we left to come to Christ. We are citizens of God’s kingdom. Be faithful to God, for He is faithful to you. Live for Christ and walk in the light of life.
Bountiful blessings to you!
Amen
