Scripture: “In my name, they will drive out demons, they will speak in new tongues, they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well”; (Mark 16:18 NIV).

The act of laying on of hands is biblical. Jesus used many methods in which he healed, some of which often included the touch of his hands. Here are two recorded accounts of Jesus laying hands and healing.

In Bethsaida, some of the towns peoples brought a blind man to Jesus and they begged Him to touch the man. He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. After putting spit on the man’s eyes and laying his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?” The blind man looked up and said, “I see people who look like trees walking around.” Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, and his sight was restored. He saw everything clearly; (Mark 8:23-26 NIV).

Here is John’s testimony, “Jesus saw a man who had been blind from birth. His disciples asked him “Rabbi, who sinned this man or his parents that he was born blind?” Jesus said “Neither, but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in his life. After telling them a few things, Jesus spat on the ground and made some mud and put it on the blind man’s eyes”; (John 9:6).

In both accounts, it was not the spit or the mud, or the saliva mixture that allowed the healing, for Jesus needs no props. The greater need of each man was for increased faith. Jesus recognized this spiritual need and offered physical action as a means of raising their expectations and their trust in Him.

The Book of Acts validates the miraculous power that Jesus promised would be done through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. The act of the laying on of hands in the early Church is a means of connecting the message with the messenger, and the spiritual gift with the receiver. In Acts 19, the Holy Spirit bestowed the gift of speaking in tongues with the act of laying on of hands. It provided a sign that authenticated the physical manifestation of the spiritual gift that was given.

 Paul told the people to believe in the one coming after him (John the Baptist), that is in Jesus. On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied; (Acts 19:4-6).

This next testimony may be difficult to believe; after I heard it I was skeptical. A while ago, a co-worker told me a testimony about her father drinking poison in an attempt to end his life. But to no avail, he was protected by the will and grace of God! My friend testified that her father suffered no detrimental harm or loss to his person. After hearing her testimony I didn’t believe it. In my natural mind I thought, How is it humanly possible to drink a deadly substance and live to speak about it. He drank poison and he can speak? How was this possible? I had my doubts, but later as I continued to walk by faith, I grew and matured in the spiritual things of God. Without a doubt, I know for sure that nothing is impossible with God; (Luke 1:21).
