Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it; (Prov. 4:23).
What does it mean to guard your heart? The heart is the inner core of a person’s being. Our thoughts, feelings, actions, desires, and well-being reflect our character. The abundance of what’s inside the heart spills over, and what we really think is revealed. For out of the mouth, the abundance of the heart speaks.
Life and death are in the power of the tongue; (Prov. 18:21). The Bible tells us to speak life and not death. The words that we speak can either bless or curse. A good man out of the heart’s treasures brings forth good things; an evil man out of the evil treasures of his heart brings for evil things; (Matt. 12:35). Don’t let your tongue become a snare to you.
God examines a man’s heart; He does not judge by outward appearances; (1 Sam. 16:17). What’s inside of the man’s heart, God already knows. He knows when we’re prideful by what we say. Be mindful that He hates pride. We must be careful of ill-spoken words against ourselves and others. We should repent and ask God for the forgiveness of unkind, misspoken words. We will all have to stand before the judgment seat of God and give an account for every idle word spoken.
A bad attitude can cause you to fall into trouble. Get rid of bitterness, anger, and rage; (Eph. 4:31-32). Also, get rid of pride. Avoid all perverse conversations and walk according to the ways of the Lord.
Fill your mind with words of wisdom and speak life. Keeping your heart with all diligence means that you are carefully attentive to your thoughts, words, and deeds. Strive for an excellent spirit. Guard your heart with diligence, for out of it flows the wellspring of life. Be of good cheer, speak life, and live it to the fullest.
May God’s grace and his goodness follow you all of the days of your life. Amen.
