Focus Scripture: “And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear and understand: Not that which goeth into the mouth that defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. But those things which proceed out of the mouth comes forth from the heart; and they defile the man”; (Matt. 15:10-11, 18 KJV).

“What Are You Talking About?” 

The Bible warns us about our speech. Salt water and bitter water should not flow from the same fountain; (James 3:11). This basically means that sweet words and bitter words should not come out of our mouths. This principle is essential for all Christians. The validity of our words should build a solid foundation for our future and our posterity.

Life and death are in the power of the tongue; (Prov. 18:21). Every word that we speak produces either “life” or “death”. The Book of Proverbs informs us that we will be judged for every idle word spoken; and alerts us to the fact that we can be ensnared by our words; (Prov. 6:2). Proverbs 15:23, tells us to speak life that we may live. By choosing to speak positive words our lives can be transformed.

The Focus Scripture (above) represents an outward religion that leaves the heart desperately wicked. The food that we eat does not defile our words, but negative words spoken and heard subjects us to wickedness. What we listen to turns into thoughts, and those thoughts enter the heart and exit from the mouth. The evil within a man will show itself from the heart through the mouth. 

It’s what exits the mouth that defiles a man. Defile means “to render; to make unclean or impure; to corrupt the purity or perfection of something.” Evil that comes out of a man is fruit of wickedness which resides within man’s heart. The heart is the organ that gives expression to inward thoughts. It is the core of our being. The heart makes a man think that he is holy and righteous when he is far from that.

The total depravity of man is seen throughout the Bible. Man is held captive by sin due to the fall of Adam, and he does not will to seek God; (Rom. 3:10-11). From birth we are totally deprived of God, thus making the sinful lifestyle seem right to a man; (Ps. 51:5; Prov. 14:12). Man looks at the outward appearance and judges them to be good, while God looks at the motives of man’s heart; (1st Sam. 16:7).

It’s clear that all of mankind is affected by sin and it is only by the sovereign grace of God that He draws a man to a state where he can choose to accept or reject Him. It is only after God infuses spiritual life into a man that he can see God’s kingdom. This is the sovereign act of God. Society teaches that man is good and that his environment by which he is raised causes the conditions of the heart. In actuality, the fact of the matter is that we all are affected by a universe set on the course of sin, which leads to destruction.

God knows every secret within the heart (Ps. 44:21). He examines our deepest motives and inward desires. Only by His power can the depravity be untangled for His Spirit searches all things; (1st Cor. 2:10). He does not abandon us in our struggles. He provides grace and strengthens us to overcome the sin nature. He removes our stony hearts and replaces it with a heart of flesh; (Ezek. 11:19). He accomplishes this by the implanting of His Spirit into man’s heart. His desires become our desires and His will becomes our will. We then have oneness and peace with Him.

Lastly, do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouth, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen; (Eph. 4:29).
