“But godliness with contentment is great gain”; (1st Tim. 6:6).
The Apostle Paul conveyed the full meaning of the peace and joy that contentment brings when he wrote the First Epistle to Timothy. Paul had approximately 25 years of experience in being abased or abound throughout his Christian journey. Oftentimes, he was without material possessions; he was a man who was well acquainted with lack. He told Timothy that if we have food and clothing, we should be content; (v. 5).
The Greek word for contentment is “sufficiency”. A man is to be content with what he has and he should be thankful, as well. Paul made it clear that God gives all things pertaining to life and godliness and that the condition of godliness is great gain; (v.6).
Why is godliness great gain? Because with contentment comes great peace. This peace surpasses all understanding. It’s a peace that is mind boggling to family members and friends who cannot understand your joy and peace in the midst of your situation. They try to figure you out and conclude that you must be losing your mind because no sane person is that happy during adversity.
Well, the Bible tells us that those who fear (reverence), God shall lack no good thing that is convenient for them (Ps. 34:10). That’s because God is able to make all graces abound to you, so that in all sufficiency in all things, at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work; (2 Cor. 9:8).
As you’re resting in the peace of God, remember that the Christian walk is not just a journey, it’s a lifestyle. Most important of all, it’s a walk of faith. “We walk by faith and not by sight”; (2nd Cor. 5:7).
I pray that the peace of God will dwell richly in your heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Take time to tell others about the love of God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
