Double Jeopardy: There Will Not Be A Second Trial

DOUBLE JEOPARDYScripture: It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age, if they fall away, to be brought back to repentance, because to their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace; (Heb. 6:4-6 NIV).

DOUBLE JEOPARDY (noun), double prosecution, double punishment, re-charged, re-litigated, re-prosecuted, tried for the same crime twice.

Double Jeopardy – placing someone on trial a second time for an offense for which he/she has been previously acquitted, even when new incriminating evidence has been unearthed. This is specifically prohibited by the Fifth Amendment.

Man’s Law

The Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution provides, “No person shall…. be subject for the same offense (sic) to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb.” This provision, known as the Double Jeopardy Clause, prohibits state and federal governments from prosecuting individuals for the same crime on more than one occasion or imposing more than one punishment for a simple offense. Each of the 50 states offers similar protection through its own constitution, statutes, and common law.

Recently, I watched the movie Double Jeopardy, starring Ashley Judd and Tommy Lee Jones. Ashley Judd’s husband faked his own death, in order to claim a 2 million dollar insurance policy and start a new life with a woman that he desired more than his wife.

God’s Moral Law

For when we were yet without strength, in due time, Christ died for the ungodly. Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all man, for that all have sinned. (For until the law sin was in the world, sin is not imputed where there is no law. Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgressing, who is the figure of him that was to come. But not as the offense, so also is the free gift. For if through the offense of one many be dead, much more the grace of God and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. For as by one man’s disobedience, many were made sinners, so the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. Moreover, the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound. That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so, might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord; (Heb. 5:6-21).

Many Christians have accepted Christ and have received salvation through His redemptive work on the Cross. Made free from sin, became the servants of righteousness. But because of the flesh’s infirmities, have yielded their members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. But they continue to live according to their flesh.

“Beware, God Still Judges Sin”

Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, neither thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you, but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God. Flee fornication. For ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s; (1 Cor. 6:9-11, 18, 20).

While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by his Son’s death, much more, being reconciled we shall be saved by his life. And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, you became the servants of righteousness.

Deeds of the Flesh

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness. Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness, full of envy, murder, deceit malignity, whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, the proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, covenant-breakers, and the unmerciful. Those who know the judgment of God, which commit such things, are worthy of death; and they take pleasure in doing so; (Rom. 1:18, 29-32). These things should not be, seeing that we have been crucified with Christ and having shared in his baptism, having the presence of the Holy Spirit dwelling within us.

“To do these things is as sin needing to revisit Christ for repayment and re-crucified for what He has already been crucifying Christ again.”

To do so is as Double Jeopardy! We must take Christ off the Cross and put ourselves on the cross. Crucify your fleshly desires! Don’t live without Christ.

Galatians 5:7 says, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked; for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption, but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

In conclusion of the matter, “Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof”; (Rom. 13:14). Christ has already sacrificed himself, once for all forever. There will not be a second trial. When he comes back, He will come as Judge; (Rev.22:12).

Blessings to you!
