Scripture: BELOVED, BELIEVE not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world; (1 John 4:1-3 KJV).
Seeing that we are in the dispensation of grace, we know that we are in the last days, for these verses confirm that we are. Many antichrists are here, and by this, we know that we are in deceiving times. The above passage of Scripture clearly states that there are two rival influences contending for power over the spirits of men. We must test man’s spirit to see whether they are of the Spirit of truth or the spirit of error. By “every spirit” means either every doctrine that is pretending to come from the Spirit of God or every teacher who professes to be qualified as being sent by God. Such spirits claim to have His Light, His Knowledge, and His Doctrine.
Every faithful minister of the Gospel is called by God and has the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who qualifies us for ministry work. The spiritual light of the knowledge of God comes through Him. The Holy Spirit teaches sound doctrine and leads us into all truth. He has total recall, and He brings every truth to our remembrance. Some call themselves ministers of the Gospel, who may have some natural abilities, and a bit of human learning and knowledge, but they have never received either grace or gifts. They have not been called by God, nor do they have the power of God.
The Apostle John warns us to try the spirits and test every spirit to see if it is of God. This is what every believer should do. It is your responsibility to read and search the Scriptures and prove all things by the truth of God’s Word. The Spirit of God never speaks contrary to His Word. Many false prophets have gone out into the world, these spirits creep in privily and unaware to many, except the spiritually discerning.
Test of false prophets:
They have not…..
- The wisdom of God.
- The knowledge of God.
- The fruit of the spirit.
- The truth of God
- The Word of God. (but man’s teachings)
They don’t have:
- Love
- Light
- Truth
- Savior
They are:
- Liars.
- Deceivers
- Enemies of the Gospel.
- Of the antichrist.
True followers of Christ:
- Have the Spirit of Truth.
- Have the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit
- Teach the inerrant Word of God.
- Display the Fruit of the Spirit.
- Walk in the Light of the Gospel of Christ.
Learn to discern the spirit:
- The simple believe every word, but the prudent man looks well into his goings; (Prov. 14:15).
- Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing; (Matt. 7:15-16).
- Prove all things; hold fast to that which is good; (1 Thess. 5:21).
May the peace of God be with you always.
Yes it is so necessary to discern the spirit. The antichrist of the world are very deceiving and sound like they know the scriptures, but they know how to twist the scriptures too. Be cautious who you follow. Thanks for your service to the Lord.

Hi Tracy! Thank you for your comment. I agree, we need to be aware of those who aopear to be holy but discern the spirit within. Scripture tells us that we will know them by their fruit (or the lack of). God bless you.

That’s why it’s so important to spend time with God so you’ll be able to recognize his voice. His sheep knows His voice!

Thank you Cherese. I agree. By spending quality time reading and meditating on God’s Word, it becomes alive. It ministers truth and revelation to your spirit. Within your spirit and you learn to discern other sources around you. You learn to distinguish error from truth because you have the Holy Spirit, who is our teacher, is living in you. At this point ungodly persons and activity is easily recognized.
