Today’s Scripture: “Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and Judah, and Simon? And are not this sisters here with us?” (Mark 6:3 KJV)
Jesus was the son of a carpenter. It was almost certain that the wood craftsman skills of Joseph was learned by Jesus. The custom in those days among the working class was that a trade be passed down from father to son, often through generations.
The above question asking “who Jesus is,” was made by those who were offended that one who was a carpenter would call himself a prophet and a teacher. But these Nazarenes did not know that Jesus was the Son of God, nor could they ever believe that Jesus is God. This was indeed a stumbling block for them. They could not believe that God would humble himself to carpentry. Jesus’ craft was indeed befitting of him, after all his Father is the Architect and Builder of the World.
According to St. Chrysostum, our Lord made ploughs and yokes for oxen. Perhaps the following similitudes that Jesus used in his teachings were drawn from his craft:
“No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62).
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me” (Matt. 11:29 KJV).
Eph. 2:19-22, gives us details of the household of God with Jesus being the Chief Cornerstone of that house. It describes the church which was promised, built, and continues to be ruled by Christ.
Jesus, the son of a lowly carpenter from Nazareth is the Greatest Builder. The original foundation was laid by Him. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made (John 1:3). Christ was the son of a lowly carpenter, yet He is indeed the Son of God.
May you continue to grow in wisdom and gain knowledge of the wonderful things that God has prepared for you. May you continue to glean the blessings that God has for you.
