Green Pastures And Still Waters

The Good ShepherdScripture: He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters; (Psalm 23:2 KJV).

Psalm 23 portrays Jesus as a Shepherd leading and feeding His flock. Green pastures are lands used for grazing. These grounds are rich and fertile (Ezek. 34:14). The land is rich with good food for grazing whereby the flock may feed to the full.

Likewise, spiritual food is suitable to the spirits of men led to green pastures by the Spirit of God. This food is sweet to the taste, gives us renewed strength, and provides health for the bones. Our Shepherd leads us to eat and drink freely. “He leads” means that He goes before us to show us the way. It is for us to follow Him. Where He leads there is progress, and there are provisions. The Shepherd meets the sheep’s need for food, water, rest, safety, and direction. We will not lack the necessities of life because He knows exactly what we need before we realize there is a need; (Luke 12:22-30).

Sheep will not lie down when they are hungry, nor will they drink from fast-flowing streams. The Shepherd leads us to quite waters of rest and peace. These waters are not rapid torrents that make raging angry sounds, but gentle, quiet and motionless waters. These waters are cleansing, purifying, thirst-quenching, and replenishing the soul. The Shepherd finds rest for the disquieted soul. He leads us in the way of righteousness and peace. He tenderly cares for the weariest of souls.

He comes in times of persecution and temptations when we are weary and downtrodden. He says, “Come, eat, I will feed you with satisfying food that you may feed to the full”; (Isa. 25:6).

Look to God for peace and hope in spite of your circumstances. If you walk with Him you will experience His blessings on the mountaintop where the grazing is plentiful, and your thirst will be quenched from waters that are still and peaceful. The eternal God is our Shepherd. He is forever faithful to provide. No good thing will He withhold from you.

Bountiful Blessings to you!
